Aug. 28, 2010 - The firm sponsors a "scooping" team -- featuring the "Bowl-ful of Cherry" flavor - and serves as the official vote counter for the annual Pressley Ridge Ice Cream Fundae event at the Pittsburgh Zoo. Guests sample a variety of Hagan ice cream flavors at various stations throughout the zoo and vote for their favorite. In his congratulatory remarks, Pressley CEO Scott Finnell thanks the firm for its services as the organization's auditor.

Aug. 26, 2010 - For the fifth consecutive year, Malin Bergquist and its Closely Held Business Advisors group sponsor the Pittsburgh Business Times' "Pittsburgh 100" which honors the 100 fastest-growing, privately held companies in the region, at an awards ceremony in the city's Duquesne Club. CEO Jeffrey Deane announces the finalists in the categories of Professional Services and Manufacturing and presents the top awards in these categories to Justiceworks Youthcare Inc. and Extech/Exterior Technologies, Inc., respectively. Winners list.
Aug. 10-11, 2010 - Selected from among a national pool of nominees, manager Sean Kocan joins nine other accountants on the CPA Exam Passing Score Panel of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants in Chicago. The panel reviews exam materials, evaluates candidate performance and recommends to the AICPA Board of Examiners a revised passing score on the audit and attestation portion of the revised Uniform CPA Exam. To be launched Jan. 1, 2011, the new exam will include a potentially revised passing score scale along with changes in content, format and structure.

Aug. 7-8, 2010 - At the leafy Memorial Park in New Kensington, PA, several scores of team members raise $4,246 in the Alle-Kiski Relay for Life benefitting the American Cancer Society, co-sponsored by Malin Bergquist Charities, Inc. These funds, which have been matched by the firm, will be used for ACS cancer research. Sponsors of the firm's team include the Bert Insurance Group, Greensburg Shop 'n Save, Jeannette Bakery, Jeannette Distributing, Inc., Icee Co. and Persichetti's Restaurant. At right, pink hearts mounted to our pavilion bear the names -- in memory or in honor -- of loved ones stricken by the disease.
August 2010 - The YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh announces that a banner honoring the firm will be placed in its facility in Franklin Park, PA, saying: "Malin Bergquist's commitment to the Baierl Family YMCA's Campaign for Strong Communities banner program helps to support families in the community who would otherwise not be able to participate at the Y in family, social and wellness programs."
August 6, 2010 - Kathleen Hamilton is named to the planning committee for the "Ladies Only Luncheon" benefitting the Dr. Gertrude A. Barber National Institute in Erie. The luncheon will be held in November 2010, with proceeds to assist children with disabilities.

July 23-24, 2010 - Despite torrential rain and heavy lightning, more than 100 team members, family and friends participate in the firm's fifth annual "Relay for Mike" walk as part of the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life at Fairview High School near Erie. The effort, led by Malin Bergquist Charities Inc., raises nearly $17,000, including a firm match, to be used for cancer research. Sponsors include the Bert Insurance Group, Catering on Parade, Lake View Country Club and Bella Salon & Day Spa.

Accountant Christopher Elliott is appointed to an Erie advisory panel of Athena PowerLink®, a non-profit organization providing professional advice to women-owned businesses. He joins the firm’s Ryan Brosius, who has served on the local panels for more than seven years. To qualify for assistance, companies must be at least 51 percent owned by a woman; in operation for at least two years; employ a minimum of two individuals; and generate annual revenues of $250,000 (manufacturing or retail) or $100,000 (services).
July 15-17, 2010 - Malin Bergquist again is a sponsor of the Erie's Fifth Annual Roar on the Shore, one of the fastest-growing free motorcycle rallies in the nation, attracting more than 50,000 bikers and enthusiasts, and serving as a major fundraising event. This year's beneficiary is SafeNet-Children's Garden,
providing sanctuary, support, education and advocacy
for abused women and children. Partner Clarence Kearney -- a Harley owner who has been elected as chairman of the 2011 event -- and his wife Sandra Kearney (also a CPA at the firm) personally matched the firm's donation.

July 6, 2010 - With a team funded by a grant from Malin Bergquist Charities, Inc., the firm's William Steger, Christopher Elliott, Nick Kaliszewski and John Kuhn are one of the highest ranked squads competing in the annual "Take A Swing Against Breast Cancer" tournament at Erie's Uht Park, with all teams collectively raising $5,000 to benefit the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition.
Together with the Pennsylvania Association of Community Bankers, the Coalition also holds charity home run derbies in all 11 of the state's minor league baseball stadiums to raise funds and public awareness for the cause.

The Pittsburgh Foundation is the 14th largest community foundation in the United States, improving the quality of life in the region by evaluating and addressing community issues, promoting charitable giving, and connecting donors to the critical needs of the community. More than 1,000 private funds are managed by the foundation, benefiting a wide variety of nonprofit organizations and community needs.
May 14, 2010 - Partner William Finnecy is elected to the Council of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), as representative of the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA). Among other responsibilities, he will help this primary strategic decision-making body -- governing the nation's 350,000 CPAs -- in making recommendations to Congress on measures to enhance U.S. financial reporting and taxation systems. May 4, 2010 - John Kuhn receives his designation as a certified public accountant (CPA) from the Pennsylvania State Board of Accountancy. Kuhn is a member of Malin Bergquist’s Forensic Accounting and Litigation Support and Not-for-Profit/Tax-Exempt Organization Groups. He holds a master’s degree in business and a bachelor’s degree in finance and accounting of St. Bonaventure University. The firm now has 49 accountants who hold CPA designations.
