Nov. 7, 2008 - In an editorial, Pittsburgh Business Times editor Lauren Lawley Head launches Philanthropy Inc., an online community where not-for-profit organizations present wish lists on how a contribution from the business community would deliver big returns. She highlights Malin Bergquist's signature charity, the American Cancer Society initiative to deliver children's cancer books to libraries and schools in Western Pennsylvania. Writes Head: "The Malin Bergquist program impressed me for two reasons. It provided an outlet for the firm's employees to rally together and honor former colleagues. Nov. 3, 2008 - Malin Bergquist hosts a one-day "Federal Tax Update" seminar, led by Douglas Stives, CPA, of Wiss & Co., one of New Jersey’s largest CPA firms. He is a director of the American Tax Policy Institute and the Academy of Finance and is past president of the New Jersey Society of CPAs.
Oct. 29, 2008 - Malin Bergquist will be a sponsoring firm for Northwest Pennsylvania's 8th Annual Nonprofit Day, sponsored by The Nonprofit Partnership, which provides education, training and tools to strengthen local nonprofit agencies. Sept. 25, 2008 - CEO David Bluemling is elected to the board of directors of CPAmerica International, is one of the world's largest networks of independent CPA and consulting firms, and affiliated with more than 15,000 professionals in 85 countries worldwide. CPAmerica members referred $1 million in services to Malin Bergquist the past year, including one of the few oil and gas company initial public offerings completed in 2007. Last June, Malin Bergquist hosted the annual conference of CPAmerica in Pittsburgh, bringing some 150 CPA firm leaders to the Steel City from across the nation in celebration of "Pittsburgh 250."
Sept. 16, 2008 - Partners Jeffrey Deane and Steven Heilman make a presentation on international financial reporting standards to the Erie Chapter of the Financial Executives Institute (FEI).
September 2008 - Supervisor Ryan Brosius is named to "40 Under 40: PICPA Members to Watch," by the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants, for demonstrating his commitment to the accounting professional through active involvement in PICPA committees and programs. Aug. 28, 2008 - Partner Jeffrey Deane head of the firm's International Businesses Group, authors an executive summary, IFRS: Roadmap Toward Global Financial Standards. The paper analyzes the differences between U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Procedures (GAAP -- which have become increasingly complex with many rules and exceptions -- and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) -- which are a high-quality, principles-based framework far less cumbersome to apply.

July 17-20, 2008 – More than 30 Malin Bergquist employees volunteer during the four-day Roar on the Shore, Erie’s annual motorcycle rally drawing tens of thousands of spectators. The event -- sponsored by the Manufacturer & Business Association (formerly known as the Manufacturers Association of Northwestern Pennsylvania) and Malin Bergquist, among many local corporate sponsors -- raised funds to benefit the Erie Shriners Hospital and added an estimated $18 million to the local economy.

June 24-27, 2008 - Malin Bergquist serves as the host firm for the 2008 accounting and auditing conference of CPAmerica International, with CEO David Bluemling and COO Jeffrey Beach speaking at events to welcome the group to Pittsburgh to celebrate the city's 250th anniversary. Director of the firm's Public Company/SEC Group, gives a presentation on FIN 48 (accounting for uncertainty in income taxes). Christopher Luikart, information technology manager, leads a presentation on SAS 94 (effect of information technology on an auditor's considerations of internal control in a financial statement audit). June 22, 2008 - Bill Flanagan, president of the Pittsburgh 250 Commission and executive vice president of the Allegheny Conference on Community Development, interviews CEO David Bluemling on WPXI-TV to promote the upcoming national CPAmerica International conference. Also appearing on the segment is CPA Robert Kollar, director of the Master of Accountancy Program at Duquesne University's Palumbo-Donahue School of Business, to discuss how the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants is addressing the shortage of talent in the field. In concluding the interview, Flanagan thanks Bluemling "for stepping up and showing the leadership to bring them here."
May 22, 2008 - The firm's Employee Benefit Plan Audit Group releases comment on the Department of Labor's proposed safe harbor rule for the timely remittance of employee contributions to small pension and welfare plans. The proposed rule, published in the Feb. 29, 2008 edition of the Federal Register, provides for a safe harbor of seven business days for “small plans” to remit employee deferral contributions. DOL previously had been reluctant to provide any type of safe harbor for the timely remittance of employee contributions so this development is a relief to the many stakeholders of employee benefit plans across the country.

April 30, 2008 - Partner Jeffrey Deane,

BABC, an international business association promoting trade and investment between the U.S. and United Kingdom, forms domestic and transatlantic partnerships with other business and trade providers.
