Dec. 15, 2009 - In collaboration with The Nonprofit Partnership and Knox Law Firm, Malin Bergquist hosts a seminar at its Erie office entitled "How to Avoid the Hidden Land Mines of the PA Act 141 Law Governing Your Endowment," led by Vincent Halupczynski, head of the firm's Not-for-Profit/Tax Exempt Organizations Group. Dec. 11, 2009 - Partners Jeffrey Deane (head of Malin Bergquist's International Businesses Group) and Stephen Heilman are assisting the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants by helping prepare questions for future Uniform CPA Examinations. During the year, they have spent significant time at AICPA’s headquarters in New York City suggesting new examination questions covering the upcoming convergence of U.S. and international financial reporting standards. Dec. 4, 2009 - The firm announces that Christine Wilhelm, CPA, has been promoted to tax manager. She also is a certified fraud examiner (CFE) and certified divorce financial analyst (CDFA) and has practiced as an accountant since 2000. Wilhelm's professional experience covers a range of fields including corporate and individual taxation, business valuations, audits, reviews and compilations. She received her bachelor’s degree in accounting and finance in 2000 from Mercyhurst College.

Dec. 3, 2009 – Manager Rebecca Dudenhoeffer is elected treasurer of the board of Early Connections in Erie for 2010. Nov. 11, 2009 - Tax manager Michael Ruck, CPA, joins the firm, having previously been a manager with a Pittsburgh firm. He will manage a staff of accountants who provide tax consulting for business structures, state tax planning and analysis, and will lead the review of complex corporate, partnership, fiduciary and individual tax returns. He also will oversee deferred tax analysis and accounting for uncertain tax positions for clients in accordance with government regulations such as Financial Accounting Standard 109 (FAS 109) and FASB Interpretation Number 48 (FIN 48). He is a 2001 cum laude graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, receiving a bachelor of science degree in accounting.

Oct. 29, 2009 - At a dinner honoring American Cancer Society volunteers at the Sheraton Station Square in Pittsburgh, Malin Bergquist receives the Pennsylvania Division's highest annual honor, the "Corporate Excellence Award," for the firm's "leadership in the fight against cancer." G-20 is the group of finance ministers and central bank governors from important industrial and emerging-market countries from all regions of the world. Sept. 23, 2009 - CPAs Ryan Brosius and Timothy Carfang are honored as "40 Under 40: Members to Watch" by the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants for "demonstrating leadership" and both are featured and pictured in the Fall edition of the Pennsylvania CPA Journal. Brosius serves as 2009-2010 president of PICPA’s Erie Chapter and is a member of its Relations with Schools and Colleges Committee. 2009 Bike Rally Erie, PA - July 16-18

July 14, 2009 - CEO David Bluemling is named the 2009 Outstanding Entrepreneur by his alma mater, the Eberly College of Business and Information Technology at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and receives his award at a luncheon held at the Longue Vue Club in Verona, PA. Details.

June 22 , 2009 - CPA Stacey Sanders in Greensburg is named a certified estate planning specialist by the National Institute for Excellence in Professional Education. NIEPE provides education, training, testing and certification for professionals providing accounting and financial services. Sanders, a member of the Closely Held Business Advisors Group, serves on the executive committee of the Southwestern Chapter of the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants. She received her bachelor’s degree in accounting in 2002, summa cum laude, from Seton Hill University.

CPA Emerson Long currently is deployed in Iraq, his third tour of duty with the U.S. Army Reserves since 2003.

June 15, 2009 - CPA Emerson Long III, Greensburg, a member of the U.S. Army Reserves, is mobilized and assigned to duty in Iraq. This is Long's third deployment since 2003, and follows earlier tours in Iraq and the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland. During his first deployment, Long dealt in "technical intelligence" -- collecting enemy weapons on the battlefield, including buried warplanes, and analyzing them for improvements and advancements. He also helped determine if enemy weaponry was being supplied by countries in violation of treaty agreements.

May 26, 2009 - Two of the firm's accountants receive their designations as certified public accountants – Cole Beehner and Carol Rose. Beehner, a 2007 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a bachelor of arts degree, is a member of the firm’s Public Company/SEC Group and Forensic and Valuation Group. Rose joined the firm in 2006, holds a bachelor of science degree in accounting from Penn State University (1985), and works in the firm's Employee Benefit Plan Audits Group and Closely Held Business Advisors Group.

May 13, 2009 - The firm announces the addition of new accountants and staff in Erie -- Brandon Exley and Michael Tibbens. Exley, staff accountant, formerly was assistant portfolio manager for the Joseph Group Capital Management. He is a military veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and received his bachelor of science degree in finance, cum laude, from the Pennsylvania State University-Erie. Tibbens, information technology specialist, previously was senior IT specialist with Palace Business Centres. He is a U.S. Army veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom and holds an associate degree from Erie Institute of Technology.

May 12, 2009 - Malin Bergquist's Charities Committee announces the 2009 schedule for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life walks in Erie and Greensburg/ Pittsburgh to raise funds for our firmwide initiative -- leading the fight against cancer. The firm will double Relay proceeds by matching any cash donation on a dollar-for-dollar basis. The firm's team invites clients, family and friends to join a most meaningful cause. April 10, 2009 - Partners Jeffrey Deane and Stephen Heilman make a presentation on "An Introduction to IFRS" (International Financial Reporting Standards) for students in the University of Pittsburgh's Accounting Club.

March 31, 2009 - The firm announces that three new accountants and staff – Marybeth Quashnock Bolam, Kelley Ravotta and Judith Edwards – have joined the Pittsburgh office. Bolam, an accountant, previously was an intern with the firm, and earlier was employed with Northwest Savings Bank in Dubois. She is a graduate of Saint Vincent College. Ravotta, an accountant, formerly was an analyst with a small Pittsburgh accounting firm. She also owns an ice cream company in Bethel Park. She holds a bachelor of science degree from Duquesne University and is pursuing her master’s degree in business administration from Duquesne. Edwards, an administrative assistant, previously was a benefits administrator for a human resources consulting firm in Pittsburgh. She holds a bachelor of science degree from the University of Illinois, Chicago.

March 2009 - The American Cancer Society's Pennsylvania Division publishes its Connections newsletter with a feature article about Malin Bergquist's cancer book project.
