Jeffrey T. Deane is CEO of Malin Bergquist, a Pittsburgh Business Times “Top 20” public accounting firm, with an office in Erie, PA. He heads the firm’s International Business Group, which serves 40 companies doing business in the international arena.
Pictured on the front page of Accounting Today, Jeff has been praised for the firm’s strategy "to boost its hometown as a great place for international businesses to enter the U.S. market." The article also noted Jeff's strong "relationships with other professional services firms across the country and around the world through associations and networks..." He serves on the executive committee of the German-American Business Circle to enhance an infrastructure to attract and retain German companies in Pittsburgh, and on the board of the British American Business Council/Pittsburgh Region. He regularly assists governmental officials in courting foreign companies to the region, and led the firm’s sponsorship of the Pittsburgh G-20 Summit Partnership in 2009.
Jeff is a nationally recognized pioneer and expert in the convergence of GAAP with international financial reporting standards (IFRS). In 2004, he helped the U.S. subsidiary of a German-owned manufacturer convert to IFRS, including traveling to Germany to brief the key finance team about the more complex issues. Today he continues to counsel clients in this transition. He has authored IFRS articles in the Journal of Accountancy, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Erie's Business Magazine, has been quoted in stories in the Associated Press, IFRS.com and the Pittsburgh Business Times, and made IFRS presentations to professional service firms and universities.
What sets apart Jeff and his group are its significant partner involvement, continuity of staff and a one-stop approach for tax filings and financial reporting, regardless of the number of countries involved. The group’s expertise is in consolidations, inventory systems and developing/ monitoring financial and non-financial benchmarks. Jeff’s niche is serving companies headquartered in Europe, Asia and South America which have acquired, developed or opened U.S. subsidiaries. He also helps outbound U.S. clients seeking a “soft landing” in countries such as China, Brazil, Mexico and Canada. Through the firm’s membership in IPG Network, he has built relationships with leading professionals on six continents who can provide management advice, tax, and audit and accounting, as well as understanding of local customs, cultures and business practices in their jurisdictions.
Among Jeff’s clients is a safety products manufacturer headquartered in Germany. As the client has expanded, he has helped it establish subsidiaries in Mexico and the U.S., and to restructure Canadian operations. In one acquisition, the due diligence work he performed resulted in a lower purchase price than otherwise would have been paid. For the seller of a pump manufacturer, Jeff provided advice in a dispute over the purchase price adjustment based on net working capital, saving the client millions of dollars when the matter was settled in arbitration.
Jeff is a member of the American and Pennsylvania Institutes of Certified Public Accountants. He is a 1987 graduate of Robert Morris College, with a bachelor of science degree in accounting. He is married and serves on the board of his church.
