Peter J. Kern, CPA
Partner
Peter J. Kern is a partner with the Pittsburgh office of Malin Bergquist, one of Pittsburgh’s largest and fastest-growing certified public accounting firms, with an office in Erie, PA. He heads the firm’s Public Company/SEC Group, with the firm one of a handful in Western Pennsylvania to be registered with the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB).
Peter’s experience has included leading a $200 million capital raising process, through initial and secondary offerings, for an oil and gas company that acquired the interests of 13 entities and simultaneously went public. He also had led public company/SEC audit for an $80 million manufacturer of rubber parts for the auto industry, and
helped biotechnology start ups and development stage enterprises looking to raise capital through debt or equity offerings.
On clients' behalf, Peter has provided strategy and organizational vision, as well as navigating the Securities and Exchange Commission’s ever-complex accounting and reporting requirements. His perspective includes working at the board level by advising clients that are pursuing mergers and acquisitions and complex re-financings of debt and equity, assisting management with the design and structure of accounting systems in order to comply with the provisions of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, providing organizations with expert technical advice on accounting and disclosure issues, and training and evaluating of accounting personnel.
Through the firm’s annual sponsorship and committee participation in the Three Rivers Venture Fair, Peter twice has served on the fair’s “Boot Camp Committee." In this role, he worked with presenting companies to refine their “pitch” and served on panels with attorneys, venture capitalists and university leaders to critique short presentations that biotechnology and software companies made to potential investors.
Peter also leads the firm's membership in the
Marcellus Shale Task Force, Pennsylvania Independent Oil & Gas Association,
Association for Corporate Growth and Pittsburgh Technology Council. He is a former board director of the Northern Allegheny County Chamber of Commerce.
He is a member of the American and Pennsylvania Institutes of Certified Public Accountants.
In 1990, Peter received a bachelor of business administration degree from the University of Notre Dame, and his MBA in 1997 from the University of Pittsburgh’s Katz Graduate School of Business. He was certified as a public accountant in Pennsylvania in 1994.
